3D Printing for Monument Conservation: 530 Karnataka Sites

3D printing for monument conservation is the largest application of our technology outside engineering and medicine, and it began with a partnership announced in March 2024 with Karnataka’s Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage (DAMH). The aim is to 3D scan and print replicas of 530 of the state’s protected monuments and a selection of museum artefacts, so that they can be documented in three dimensions, reproduced for study and display, and, where a structure is lost, rebuilt from a record rather than a memory.

This is what the project involves, what has been made so far, and why a company that builds industrial 3D printers is doing it.

What is being made

Each monument is scanned to produce a detailed 3D model, and from that model a scaled replica is printed. The replicas serve three purposes at once.

  • Documentation. A 3D model is a record of the monument as it stands today, at a level of detail no drawing or photograph holds. If a structure is damaged by weather, earthquake or neglect, the model is the reference for restoration.
  • Access. Printed replicas of monuments and museum artefacts can be handled. For visitors with visual impairment, that is the difference between hearing about a sculpture and knowing its form; for schoolchildren, it is the difference between a photograph and an object.
  • Reconstruction. For monuments already lost to time or disaster, a model built from surviving records and a printed replica give conservators and the public something to study and to plan from.

The first piece shown publicly was a replica of a tenth-century Hoysala Nandi sculpture, presented to the Karnataka Tourism Minister at the launch, with the carving’s detail reproduced faithfully at scale.

The material choice

The replicas are printed in PLA, a thermoplastic made from plant starch. It was chosen for the detail it holds, for its rigidity in a display piece, and because a replica of a heritage object should not itself be a long-lived plastic waste problem: PLA is industrially compostable, and it prints without the fumes or the heated chamber that engineering polymers need, which matters when the printing is done near museums and offices rather than on a factory floor. Larger pieces can be printed in sections on our large-format machines and assembled, and the finest detail on small artefacts can be printed in SLA resin.

Part of a larger programme

The work is a component of EVinyasa, a collaborative heritage initiative involving DAMH and the Indian Heritage Cities Network Foundation (IHCNF), which brings together documentation, conservation and public access for Karnataka’s historic sites. Fracktal’s part is the scanning-to-replica pipeline: the 3D capture, the model preparation, and the printing at scale on our own machines.

Why a 3D printer manufacturer

Printing a monument at scale is an industrial job. A large replica is a multi-day print on a machine with a 600 mm bed, in sections that must fit each other, from a scan that has to be cleaned, hollowed and split before it can be printed at all. That is the same work as printing a large jig or an architectural model, which we do every week on the Twin Dragon and on our manufacturing floor, and the same skills as our reverse engineering service, which turns a physical object into a model. Heritage is a new subject for those skills, not a new set of them.

It is also close to why the company exists. Fracktal was founded to make digital fabrication useful to people who could not previously reach it, and a museum that can put a thousand-year-old sculpture into a visitor’s hands is that idea in its plainest form. Where it goes next

Five hundred and thirty monuments is a multi-year programme. Along the way the same pipeline is available to other institutions.
