Tooling overnight, not in six weeks

The parts that keep a factory running are almost never bought in useful quantities. One fixture. Two guards. A guide that was modified twice this year. Every one of them goes out as a purchase order and comes back weeks later, and in between the line works around it.

A printer on the floor changes the unit of time from weeks to hours. The part is modelled in the morning, printed overnight and in service the next shift — and when it is wrong, it is wrong by one night’s work.
